We live in a part of the world where winters can be harsh, and even though our adorable Shih Tzus love snow, they can still resist going out when temperatures fall below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Check out ZaiZai and MoMo playing happily in the snow.

Shih Tzu dogs have been developed in Tibet and China, where the environment is similar.  Tibet has colder temperatures because of higher altitudes than China.  The winters in Tibet are cold, with an average temperature of around-2 ° C in January.

In China, temperatures vary from icy to warm, depending on location.  The original Shih Tzu, which was bred and evolved in China, experienced cooler climates, making them versatile to modern cold climates and winter temperatures.

Frostbite is also a possibility for dogs.  Keep that in mind when you're out for a long time.  Shih Tzu dogs should never be left out.  They're exclusively house dogs.  Here are some cold weather tips to keep your Shih Tzu healthy, happy, and comfortable in the winter.

Excessive calories may be needed for dogs playing hard outdoors or taking long walks.

To prevent your Shih Tzu from picking up ice and snow on her legs, trim the hair around the bottom of the legs and remove any hair between both paw pads where the ice can build up.

If Shih Tzu dogs have a long coat, they're probably OK to go outside without a coat or sweater.  If you trim your Tzu, a sweater or a coat is highly recommended.  Some people are also buying doggie boots for outdoor walks.
