Bambi the Shih Tzu Loves to Fetch || Always a Puppy

The fetch command is one of the most basic commands you can teach your Shih Tzu command. Besides teaching your dog a new skill, it's also a great way to have fun with your dog, and at the same time, to get him to exercise. More than that, it's also your chance to get your dogs to pick up things for you (you wish!).
It's a must that you understand that it's not an easy thing to do before you push through with teaching your dog to fetch. Many dogs are natural retrievers and very good at it; this is often the case with spaniels, labradors, and, of course, retrievers. They're so good at playing fetch because it's in their genes. They were brought up by humans for it.
However, it's harder to train Shih Tzus' to fetch because he is bred to do something else entirely. For one, many dogs will have some difficulty understanding the concept of retrieving the ball (or any other toys) that you have thrown at. They're going to try to chase after the toys, but they're not going to bring it back to you, and they're going to be confused when you pick it up just to throw it again and again.
You may need to reward small steps for picking up the item, such as opening your mouth around it or picking it up for a split second. Every time he does something close to pick it up, he's rewarded, and gradually your Shih Tzu, like Bambi here, will get the idea.
